Active Directory (AD) is part of the Windows Domain Controller (DC).  It is a service that stores information about users and network resources such as computers on the network.  AD simplifies network management: Security policies can be defined on the AD and applied to all computers in the domain.  User accounts can be created and managed centrally using the Active Directory Administrative Center.
